R530 and SUPER 530

TYPE:
Medium range radar guided air-to-air missile.

DEVELOPMENT:
The 530 missile development programme started in the
mid-1950s and has progressed from the original R530,
through the Super 530F to the latest version, the Super
530D. The R530 entered service with the French Air
Force and French Navy in 1963 and production continued
until the late 1970s. This version had two
interchangeable seeker heads; a semi-active radar
seeker and an IR seeker with a shorter range.
Full-scale development of the Super 530F started in
1971 and was completed in 1979, with production ending
in 1985. The Super 530F was developed to intercept high
altitude, high-speed bomber targets. The third version,
the Super 530D, has been developed to provide a
capability against low flying target aircraft and has a
monopulse CW Doppler semi-active radar seeker.

DESCRIPTION:
R530 has four delta wings, with four moving clipped-tip
triangular control fins at the rear. The R530 is 3.28 m
long, with a body diameter of 263 mm, a wingspan of 1.1
m and a launch weight of 195 kg. The missile had two
interchangeable homing-head assemblies, a semi-active
radar version, and an IR version with tail-aspect only
engagement capability. Both versions had a 27 kg HE
fragmentation warhead.
The Super 530F and 530D missiles have four long chord
rectangular wings, with tapered and clipped rectangular
control fins at the rear.
