TITLE:
AA-10 'ALAMO' (R-27)
TYPE:
Medium and long range IR and radar guided air-to-air
missiles.
DEVELOPMENT:
AA-10 'Alamo' is the NATO designation and code for the
Russian fourth generation IR and radar guided
air-to-air missiles. The Russian designator is R-27 and
the 'Alamo' missiles were designed by the same bureau
that designed the AA-7 'Apex' missiles, now known as
Spetztekhnika Vympel NPO, Moscow. 'Alamo' development
probably started in the mid-1970s and the missiles show
a new and interesting design approach.
DESCRIPTION:
AA-10 'Alamo' has four fixed chamfered rectangular
canards at the nose, four large trapezoidal moving
control fins, and four fixed clipped-tip delta wings
at
the rear. The guidance system for mid-course is
inertial with command updates, but alternative terminal
seeker assemblies can be fitted to the six versions.
The four extended range and long range missile versions
have longer and larger diameter rocket motor
assemblies. All versions have a common 39 kg expanding
rod warhead, and active radar fuzes, but the R-27EM has
a modified fuze located behind the trapezoidal fins for
low level intercepts.
